KILLINGTON, Vt. - Police say a young hiker from Montreal is safe after he went missing for nearly 24 hours in the woods near Killington.

Shmuel Rabinowitz is back with his family after being lost in the Green Mountains.

"Nobody should ever live through this, no mother should ever live through what I lived through," said Chasha Rabinowitz, Shmuel's mom.

"It's not something that you ever wake up and think your brother is going to go missing," said Shaina Rabinowitz, Shmuel's sister.

Police say the 15-year-old was hiking the Appalachian Trail when he was separated from his large group of friends near the Cooper Lodge in Killington around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday night.

Multiple rescue crews were called in to assist in the search that lasted almost 24 hours. Police said they made contact with the teenager late Thursday afternoon when he ran into a hiker and used their cell phone to make a call. Shmuel was found in good health.

Along with state officials, about 100 Jewish community volunteers from Montreal, New York and Connecticut came to offer a hand.
